Do What You Love – Follow Your Passion

Some of you have heard the catch phrase “Do what you love and the money will follow,” and perhaps you agree, or you think it’s rubbish. Well, to me, it’s not about the money. It’s about happiness. I do what I love to fulfill myself, my goals, my passion, which ultimately results in happiness. Sure, money might follow if I’m lucky, but that is the icing on the cake.
Look at Steve Jobs, he was a millionaire in his 20’s! Did he retire after that first couple of million? No, he kept doing what he loved because that was his passion, and following his passion led to happiness.
Let’s look at it a different way. Say you work at a grocery store as a manager, or a bank, or a law office. You’re making pretty decent money, but your true passion is to become a painter, sculptor, or folk singer.
The job slowly starts to drown your passion and happiness, and replace it with a guilty pit in your stomach. This regret of settling for a financially secure job begins to eat at you. Your true happiness is falsely replaced with that momentary rush you feel after you buy something new with the money you earn. But as we all know, money can’t buy happiness. It can buy you new flat screen TV’s, new cars, new purses, new clothes, fancy dinners, but it’s just a quick medication that always needs to be taken. It masks the root of the problem.
Don’t be a sell out. Don’t settle for less. Stand up to the challenge of pursuing what you love. There will be struggles and obstacles and tribulations, but don’t give into them. You may have to fight for what you love, but don’t ever put your hands down and willingly accept the knockout blow. If you make money in the end, great! Just don’t let it be the end goal of your efforts. Do what you love and happiness will follow.
