Why the Rule of Thirds Fails Artists

This 365 project started out with the title “The Rule of Thirds Killed Design and Left it for Dead,” so that should give you a great idea of the content within this section. I drank the kool-aid like everyone else and thought the rule of thirds was one of the absolute must-know techniques for composition. In the end it only hurt my compositions and made my photos have a cookie cutter feel like others. It was hard, but I have finally broke the habit of plotting on thirds. Check this section out if you want to know why the rule of thirds is a watered down form of composition.

Dynamic Symmetry

Dynamic symmetry is the foundation to all great master art. It helps create unity, movement, and rhythm, and every remarkable master painter used it in their work.

Golden Ratio (Phi Ratio, etc)

The golden ratio has been something held in great regard for centuries and centuries. From ancient times, until now, it still amazes those that take the time to understand it. We can use it in our art to help create harmonic proportions, but it can also be misused as you’ll find out in this section.
